Our homes are reflections of our hearts.</span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;color:#666600;">There is no greater satisfaction than seeing families sit down together for a meal in a dining room they once never used. Or to hear that a couple now sits by the fire each night with a glass of wine discussing activities of the day with each other, where there once was no comfortable place in which to settle. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;color:#666600;">Is your home just a stopover that you try to leave as quickly as possible? Does your home have your individual imprint on it? We can create these beautiful homes and without friends and family to frequent them they are mere shells of grandeur. </span><br /></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">Using a home is what makes it a home and not just a show <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">piece</span>. People need comfort in order to feel at home.</span><br /></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">Comfort is the word that keeps coming into my client interviews. From my client's teenage daughter's room to the family's gathering place (pictured above) they want comfortable fabrics, comfortable seating, comfortable carpeting, comfortable lighting and so on. As we continue to stay in and stay home we want a soft spot to land.</span><br /></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">People want comfy cushy fabrics, cozy chairs, snug, gratifying <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">environments</span> that <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">satisfy</span> our need for security while <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">alleviating</span> the stresses of the outside world.</span><br /></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">Give yourself a comfy home this year...create a nook or corner that you can curl up into and read or listen to music and relax. More<strong> stuff</strong> is not my <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"><span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">favorite</span></span> gift...because I can't even remember what I have gotten from year to year!</span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">My husband has spoiled me with all sorts of beautiful things...but honestly, I don't remember what I got for Christmas 2008.</span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">So with that in mind we are not giving gifts...other than the most important gift of all...<span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">ourselves</span>. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">I saved all of his "love" email/ letters from our year of dating and I put them in a special box.</span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">On my birthdays I ask for a love letter. And now with my <strong>no more stuff </strong>mantra I am receiving what I really want...and that is his expression of love for me in the form of a <em>love letter for</em> Christmas. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">I can go back through the box and read the progression of our romance, flush with intoxication and now after five years, a deeper enduring love, with the punctuation of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">life's</span> journey through ups and downs, our bond has tied us tightly together. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">Letters are becoming a thing of the past in our email age. If you get an email from your loved ones that is endearing, print it out and save it in a special box.</span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#666600;">I encourage you to write a love letter to those you love. But I have seen it many times. When you have a comfortable, pleasing place to sit and talk to other people, read a book, entertain, pay bills ...you get the idea... you will feel connected with your life. (The opposite is true if you don't have these spaces.)</span></div><br /><div><span style="color:#666600;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="color:#666600;">When you are organized your life has room to grow. When your living environment is orderly and pleasing to your eye, you can rest in that space. And <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">de-cluttering</span> is the first part of the step towards living with the things you love and creating space in which to "see" those things.</span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;"></span> </div><div><span style="color:#666600;"></span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;">Cleaning out the clutter in the hidden spaces is just as important as cleaning the public areas. If you open a drawer and everything pops out like a jack in the box, you will feel unsettled. </span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;"></span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;">I just took a break from organizing my bookcase in the photo above. It had a smattering of cookbooks, sunglasses, pottery, etc. I took everything out and started over. January is GO (Get Organized) Month and at Organizers Northwest we are gearing up for a busy year. You can start planning now and get a fresh start for 2009!</span></a><span style="color:#666600;"><br /></span><a name="LETTER.BLOCK6"></a><br /><span style="color:#666600;"><strong>Quick Tips</strong> to get you organized in the New Year. Tackle one, two, or all of these items to feel revved up and ready to embrace the months ahead.<br /><br /><strong>Calendar.</strong> Now is the time to decide if you are going paper or electronic. Get your special occasions and recurring events added.<br /><br /><strong>Kitchen.</strong> Check out your countertops. Horizontal surfaces are notorious for collecting clutter such as seldom used appliances. Keep only appliances that you use regularly on your countertops and relegate all others to a little used cupboard.<br /><br /><strong>Pantry.</strong> Now's the time to take stock of your pantry items. Toss expired items and replace if necessary. Donate food you won't use. Check dates on herbs and spices and head to your grocery store's bulk bins to replenish and reuse those containers. Winco, New Seasons, and Whole Foods have a great selection of bulk food items.<br /><br /><strong>Refrigerator.</strong> Pull everything out and wipe, wipe, wipe! Vinegar and water make a great natural sanitizer and kill lingering odors. Clean the shelves, drawers, door storage, and any other nooks and crannies. Wipe down bottles and containers as you return them to the fridge. Toss out old food that is expired. Add a new box of baking soda to keep everything smelling fresh and clean.<br /><br /><strong>Utensil Drawer.</strong> Take everything out of the drawer then take inventory. Do you really need 2 banana slicers, or even one for that matter? Donate duplicate and unused items to charity. I am a big fan of this casual chic Euro look too. I took my own advice and made sure that the decorations did not detract from the home's existing colors of cream, milk and chalk.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Boxwood garlands abound on stairways, wrapped around the Christmas tree, draped over the entry hall hutch, tucked into silver bowls and white milk pitchers. I used a theme (natural and green ) and just added to it in every nook.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">I uncovered a very large elk horn in my mother's basement last week. I thought it would be the perfect touch on the dining room table ...so it's now on loan for the holidays. I draped her antique pine table in a heavy white quilt. Nestled among the horn is a slightly tarnished sterling silver bowl filled with green apples, it's a family treasure. Fir and cedar bows are tucked underneath. (See photos below.)</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">The entry hall begged for a grand gesture, so I pulled in a cement urn from outside dusted off the snow and filled it sky high with greens and berry covered branches. I made a "collar" out of leftover boxwood garland.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#666600;">The fireplace is so beautiful I didn't want to draw your eye away from it ...so I banked two cypress trees on either side. I hope I can help to make your home beautiful with some easy design tips.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"><strong>1. Use what you already have.</strong> </span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;">I had a silver sea shell in the powder room that holds guest soaps. I used it on my dining table at Christmas filled with orchids.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Fill your grandma's glass punch bowl with greens. </span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Use a white quilt as a table cloth.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Fill a pedestal cake plate with votive candles.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Lay down a bed of fresh greens, then fill a large glass bowl with water and float Chinese glass floats and floating candles as a centerpiece.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"><strong>2. Decorate with colors that coordinate with your decor.</strong></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">This is probably the biggest mistake that I see people make each year...they decorate with colors that do not work with their existing decor and it is not enhancing to their home.</span> </div><div><span style="color:#666600;">I used silver and blue to coordinate with my floating home decor.</span><br /><strong><span style="color:#666600;"></span></strong><br /><strong><span style="color:#666600;">3. Add a touch of whimsy.</span></strong><br /><span style="color:#666600;">Bring out a ceramic white bunny, wooden horse, iron dragonfly. Look around your garden for decorative element that might be a nice touch inside for the holidays.</span><br /><span style="color:#666600;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666600;">And don't forget to have fun with your decor...incorporate things that you might not normally see on a tree...like nestling brightly colored patterned porcelain plates towards the trunk of the tree where they would be secure but add much needed punch!</span></div><div><span style="color:#666600;"></span> </div><div><span style="color:#666600;"><a href="http://www.kimberleejaynes.com/">www.kimberleejaynes.com</a> </span></div>
