New York’s abundant art and design welcomes a select few interior designers for “Design in New York: Uptown Downtown” November 11 – 13, 2009. Here’s what Kelley Proxmire, a design leader in Washington DC said about last Spring’s program:"Design in New York is stimulating – both intellectually and inspirationally!"Join me as we bridge design’s eras of Enlightenment, Modernism and Edge. We start uptown in the Beaux Arts on our private tour of the Frick Collection and New York School of Interior Design; then downtown to find innovative material, fiber and artisanal craft in the Musuem of Art and Design; eventually transported to design’s most contemporary edge in Tribeca, SoHo and the MeatPacking District of art and fashion.All the while wrapped in the comfort and style of the very new and very vanguard Standard Hotel. Tuesday, November 10: Arrival in New York at the Standard Hotel – downtown’s mecca of fashionable shopping, dining, art and antiques.Wednesday, November 11: town cars take us Uptown to the fine art start of where it all started – the Frick Collection, one of America’s largest private collections of Renaissance art housed in one of the finest architectural examples of the Beaux Arts.Next, ‘The Twentieth Century Adventure; Beaux Arts through Art Deco’ presented by renown architectural scholar and author David Garrard Lowe.Lunch will be in the Asia Society, followed by New York School of Interior Design hosting exclusive views of interior design in New York featuring their Alumni Exhibit vividly presented by alumni.The immersion cascades that evening when we attend the theater on Broadway.Thursday, November 12: beginning on Columbus Circle, the archival Museum of Art and Design, enshrined within its new façade that features textured terracotta panels and transparent fritted glass, materials that express the Museum’s celebration of creativity in art, craft, and design.Later, we tour the Museum of Modern Art examining the significant Bauhaus influence on modernism featuring icons of design like Marcel Breur, Josef Albers, Paul Klee and rediscovered objects rarely seen outside Germany.Lunch at The Modern Restaurant overlooking MOMA’s acclaimed sculpture garden.Moving downtown to the Bowery, The New Museum is about new art and new ideas. It’s building designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, is a home for contemporary art and an incubator for new ideas, as well as an architectural contribution to New York’s urban landscape. The New Museum is a combination of elegant and urban, just like our program.Dinner with one of many new-age chef-signature restaurants in the Meatpacking District.Friday, March 27: Business first – we collaborate in a workshop on business practices and new ways to overcome the challenges of the current economy.Then, it’s venture to the skyline breaking ‘High Line,’ one of the many inspiring aspects of what makes New York New York.Departures may begin after lunch on Friday, but extended stays will be available from the Standard Hotel at the group rate.But before you think about leaving, plan to be with us.
