I first saw this wallpaper in the Seattle Design Center and liked the texture and the fact that it is a new resource for recylced newpaper.
Used paper accounts for about 40% of our waste in America and is about 35% by weight of municipal solid waste. The benefits of recycling paper are debated, but studies show that there is a 40% energy reduction when paper is made from recycled content versus from virgin pulp.
That being said, as the newspaper industry is contracting due to the internet and inventions like the Kindle and Ipad, perhaps its worth exploring other uses for recycled newspaper than simply making more paper. Why not transform the stack of newspaper on the bathroom floor into an imaginative wallcovering that is textural and colorful without being overwhelming. Lori Weitzner launched Weitzner Limited in 2004 to explore textiles and wallcoverings made with a combination of ancient and modern materials. “Using an age-old technology of upcycling old newspapers, 100% real newsprint strips are handwoven on a loom and then paperbacked to make Newsworthy suitable for the wall. A wonderful, tactile alternative to an expected grasscloth.” From a distance, Newsworthy is a striated gray field of subtle colors similar to a natural fiber wallcovering. Up close, its true nature becomes apparent, showing off text of all styles and scales as well as splashes of color from the images.
